After an injury, getting rid of pain is only part of the recovery process. The real challenge is restoring strength, muscle activation, and efficient movement so your body can perform the way it was designed to. That’s where advanced technologies can make a difference. At Fick PT & Performance, ARPwave Therapy is integrated into Sports Physical Therapy to help athletes recover more efficiently, retrain proper movement patterns, and return to sport with confidence.
What Is ARPwave?
ARPwave is a direct current electrical stimulation therapy designed to help the body recover more efficiently by increasing blood flow, improving range of motion, and restoring strength. Unlike traditional electrical stimulation devices, ARPwave focuses on re-establishing the communication between the brain and muscles. After an injury, the body’s natural protective response can inhibit certain muscles around the injury site, essentially “turning them off” to prevent further damage. This disruption in the mind-muscle connection can delay recovery and lead to weakness or compensation patterns. ARPwave helps reactivate these muscles, allowing them to function properly again and promoting faster, more complete healing.
What Injuries Can ARPwave Treat?
ARPwave is a versatile treatment option that can be incorporated into rehabilitation for a wide variety of orthopedic conditions. It is commonly used for muscle strains, ligament sprains and tears, arthritis, tendonitis, and both pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation. Whether the injury involves the upper or lower extremities, ARPwave can help reduce pain, restore function, and improve muscle activation throughout the recovery process. It is beneficial for both acute injuries and chronic conditions that have resulted in ongoing weakness or limited movement.
How Is ARPwave Used in Physical Therapy?
During an ARPwave treatment session, electrode pads are placed over weak muscles or muscles contributing to pain and movement dysfunction. The device is then adjusted to the highest intensity that the patient can comfortably tolerate while performing specific therapeutic exercises. This combination of electrical stimulation and active movement helps retrain proper muscle activation patterns while increasing circulation to the affected tissues.
ARPwave may also support nerve healing by promoting the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein that plays an important role in nerve repair, regeneration, and overall nervous system health. Additionally, the increase in blood flow helps clear metabolic waste products through both the vascular and lymphatic systems, reducing inflammation and creating a healthier environment for tissue healing.
Why Is ARPwave Beneficial for Athletes?
Athletes place significant physical demands on their bodies, making efficient recovery essential for consistent performance. ARPwave can help accelerate recovery by improving circulation, reducing muscle fatigue, restoring muscle activation, and enhancing movement quality. By helping muscles recover more quickly and function more efficiently, athletes can often return to training sooner while reducing the risk of compensation-related injuries. Whether recovering from competition, managing overuse injuries, or returning after surgery, ARPwave can be a valuable tool for optimizing athletic performance and recovery.
Non-Traditional Uses of ARPwave
Beyond traditional rehabilitation, ARPwave offers several unique treatment applications that can further enhance recovery and performance.
One example we use ARPwave in a non-traditional way at Fick PT and Performance is the use of the foot bath. During this process, the feet are immersed in water while the ARPwave current is delivered through the water. The red lead is placed more proximal on the thigh, and the black lead is attached to a wet sponge and wrapped around the opposite foot. This technique provides a broad stimulation of the feet and lower extremities, helping improve circulation, decrease stiffness, reduce discomfort, and promote overall recovery. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic foot pain, poor circulation, or generalized lower extremity fatigue.
Another unique application we use is the search mode. In this setting, the therapist uses the ARPwave device to identify areas of neurological dysfunction or muscles that may not activate properly. Search mode helps locate hidden sources of pain, muscle inhibition, and compensation patterns that may not be obvious during a standard physical examination. Once these problem areas are identified, the ARPwave can be used for treatment and directed precisely where it is needed, making therapy more efficient and individualized.
